What Is an IRF?

Understanding inpatient rehabilitation facilities and how they differ from other settings of care.

Rehabilitation area

An Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility (IRF) is a hospital that delivers intensive, physician-led rehabilitation to patients recovering from a serious illness, injury or surgery. IRFs are designed for patients who need both ongoing medical care and at least three hours of therapy per day.

How IRFs differ from skilled nursing

  • Therapy intensity — IRF patients receive at least three hours of therapy per day, five days per week.
  • Physician oversight — Patients are seen at least three times per week by a rehabilitation physician.
  • Nursing model — 24-hour rehabilitation nursing, not custodial care.
  • Interdisciplinary team — Weekly team conferences set goals and track progress.

Is an IRF right for you?
